Appendix Cancer Surgery

Appendicular cancer is a rare type of cancer originating in the appendix. Treatment often involves surgical removal and, depending on the type and spread, may include HIPEC.

Recovery Timeline

  • Varies significantly based on the extent of surgery.

Diet and Lifestyle

  • Eat Small, Frequent Meals
  • High-Protein Foods
  • Low-Fat Diet
  • Stay Hydrated

Diagnostic Tests

  • Often discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions or during appendectomy
  • CT scan
  • MRI may be used

Treatment

  • Chemotherapy: Used before or after surgery to shrink tumors or destroy remaining cancer cells.
  • Radiation Therapy: Less commonly used for appendix cancer but may be considered in certain cases for symptom control.
  • Targeted Therapy: Involves drugs that target specific cancer cell features; used in advanced or rare cases.

Surgical Options

  • Appendectomy: Simple removal of the appendix for early-stage, localized tumors.
  • Right Hemicolectomy: Removal of the right side of the colon, if the tumor is more aggressive or involves the base of the appendix.
  • Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) with HIPEC: For cases where the cancer has spread to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal carcinomatosis).
